Open source in the Corporate WorldOpen source technology is at the mainstream corporate world now. It has arrived. Technology such as Hibernate, Jasper, iText, Ajax, php, mysql, perl have come of age. It is now common to see corporate enterprise and legacy systems interface and integrate with them. How are some of them used in the corporate world? One example is the use of pdf writer Jasper in combination with Hibernate and iText pdf templating to generate multiple reports extracted from the legacy applications in the mainframe z/os system. The reports generated by batch from COBOL mainframe systems get downloaded and parsed to middleware server and generated as pdf reports or even MS Excel file. With the advent of Adobe Flash Macromedia , PHP server-side scripting language and MYSQL to store persistent data then the web 2.0 mash up web has arrived. This will continue to flourish with more live video streaming from Flash player and the embedded capability of streaming feed just like what is in this website for gemnet.tv under the Philippines region tab. In the coming years, cloud computing will mature and the web will just be treated as an ordinary desk top application that can run multi-media, content and inter-active web page externally talking to one another in protocol like SOA or for Microsoft XML-web services. Hear more of the this trend and example of how the latest convergence of open source with COBOL,CICS,IMS DB/DC, DB2 legacy system ,Java and .Net will be of common architectural frameworks. More to come on this topic. Stay tuned. |
